What is a MEHKO?
A Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation (MEHKO) is a program under California law that allows you to legally prepare and sell food directly from your home kitchen. No commercial kitchen required.
California's Retail Food Code Chapter 11.6 (AB 626) created this pathway specifically for home cooks who want to turn their cooking skills into a real business.
Good news: LA County has waived MEHKO application fees, making it free to apply for your permit.
MEHKO Permit Requirements
To sell food on PlateSend, you'll need a valid MEHKO permit from your local enforcement agency. Here's what's required:
- Food Safety Training โ Complete an accredited food processor or food handler course
- Permit Application โ Apply through your local county environmental health department (for LA County, this is the Department of Public Health)
- Kitchen Inspection โ Pass an inspection of your home kitchen by the local enforcement agency
- Annual Gross Sales Cap โ MEHKO operations are limited to no more than $75,000 in annual gross sales
- Daily Meal Limits โ You can sell no more than 30 individual meals per day or 60 individual meals per week
- Direct Sales Only โ Food must be sold directly to consumers (no wholesale, no third-party delivery services)
- Labeling โ All food sold must include proper labeling as required by California law
Important: You cannot use the word "catering" or any variation of it in your food listings. MEHKO permits do not authorize catering services.
